Rare asteroid collision caught via Hubble space telescope.

Have a glimpse of what it looks like when two asteroids crash into each other in wide open deep space. Well, not so deep really - this event occured in an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Latvian meteor-like crater, most likely thought to be a meteor, not a meteor after all.

Apparenly real craters left by meteors are not as tidy as this one was and that don't appear to have been dug out with a shovel. Oh well. See yesterday's batch of links for original story.

You just might be able to see eighty meteors per hour this evening.

From any vantage point in the world, you might see more than 80 meteors an hour streak across the sky during the best viewing time, when the moon's glare will be weakest—late Tuesday night and into the wee hours of Wednesday, local cloud and lighting conditions permitting.

Jupiter is Earth's favorite asteroid prevention unit.

...Jupiter’s overbearing gravity acts as a gravitational shield deflecting incoming space junk, mainly comets, away from the inner solar system where it could do for us what an asteroid apparently did for the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
