Storm over Saturn makes for some pretty pictures.Storm over Saturn makes for some pretty pictures.

Behold pictures of Saturn's largest and most intense storm to date (larger photos on source site). Aren't they pretty? These images come from NASA's Cassini Spacecraft. The folks over at New Scientist state that the various colors represent different altitudes of clouds, not Saturn's overall mood and/or demeanor. As a sidenote: I made a similar picture the other day by accidentally mixing oil and water on the pavement.

Reviews starting to come in for the very last Harry Potter movie.Reviews starting to come in for the very last Harry Potter movie.

It ends well. After eight films in 10 years and a cumulative global box-office take of more than $6.3 billion, the most successful franchise in the history of movies comes to an obligatory -- and quite satisfying -- conclusion in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Fully justifying the decision, once thought purely mercenary, of splitting J.K. Rowling's final book into two parts, this is an exciting and, to put it mildly, massively eventful finale that will grip and greatly please anyone who has been at all a fan of the series up to now.

App of the Week: Instantbird

InstantbirdLately I've noticed that I've somehow found myself on a great deal of sites that have their own form of instant messaging clients.  Facebook has one, Google has one, and then there's that ancient AIM account that I can never seem to let go of. The problem is that it can be more than a little annoying having to be logged into each respective utility to do something as simple as instant messaging.  Enter Instantbird. I gave this a whirl last week and I've liked it thus far. Instantbird takes all of these IM clients and puts them into one easy to use app. You can finally see a list of your Facebook friends along with your AIM friends, it works almost a little too well. After adding my Facebook list I was overwhelmed by the number of items on my typically small AIM list.

According to the Instantbird website they currently support the following clients by default: AIM, Facebook Chat, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM, Netsoul, QQ, Simple, Twitter, XMPP, Yahoo and Yahoo JAPAN. That's a pretty big list of clients.

Under the hood is a lot of code from the Mozilla project. As such there are add-ons and familiar settings panes for those who are well-versed in the art of Firefox (you'll notice some similarities mainly in the control panel section). So far I've only tried the app on Windows but there is a Mac version as well. I like that the software is minimal and for the most part stays out of your way.  For those of you can't live without tabs you can have tabbed chats.  For those who are maniacal single window fans (for purposes of IM, I fall into this category) you can turn it off. Lastly, you can also theme your IM conversations with a couple different variations. Overall I reccomend giving this app a try if you like me, you grew tired of having to log in here and log into that. Consolidation of your instant messaging is a good thing.

You can download Instantbird from their website: http://instantbird.com/.

New York City Street View circa 1982.New York City Street View circa 1982.

This is an awesome project and it makes for a glorious way to pass the time. Case in point: I am currently taking a stroll down Lexington Avenue in the year 1982 while actually sitting in an office on Lexington Avenue in 2011. My brain may very well implode any minute. Big kudos to the creator Dan Weeks for putting this together. Wow.

Hugh Grant: actor and phone hacker vigilante.Hugh Grant: actor and phone hacker vigilante.

The link above which takes you to the BBC site has the contents of this video in which Hugh Grant discusses how we turned the tables on an unsuspecting phone hacker. Phone hacking seems to be just the tip of the iceberg as Grant goes into detail as to the other kinds of nefarious activities that he uncovers. Give this man a deerstalker and a magnifying glass, well done Sherlock.

Got fifty bucks laying around and don't know what to do with it? Why not put it to some mind-numbing addictive casual video game use. As an added bonus some of these games can be quite therapeutic after a long day of work.

Let this be a lesson to you all to never leave a wi-fi network unsecured. The good news is that Google has agreed to stop collecting this data, at least for now.

The band was present at the end of 2009, right before Jupiter moved too close to the sun in the sky to be observed from Earth. When the planet emerged from the sun's glare again in early April, its south equatorial belt was nowhere to be seen.

Here we go again - not sure how Apple would've been able to make the same mistake twice given the publicity of the last prototype that was lost. A teardown of the device has revealed an Apple branded microchip, just like the iPad.

Do you have a whole bunch of Warner movies still festering on DVD? If those DVDs happen to be in their small list of seventy-five titles - you can upgrade them over to that fancy new Blu-ray format... for a small fee. What, did you think it was free? Silly human.

Cheese sandwiches can also double as punishment sentence for school food fights.Cheese sandwiches can also double as punishment sentence for school food fights.

Ah, food fights - the cornerstone of every good education. Rather than hand out detention for those involved in said food fights, one New Jersey school decided to serve up nothing but cheese sandwiches. They hope this policy will help to reduce further food fight escalations. Keep on fighting the good fight, Jersey.
