Facebook testing out new single-column design for their timeline.Facebook testing out new single-column design for their timeline.

This latest design rollout is only appearing for those residing in New Zealand at this point in time. If you really can't wait to see it the new timeline, fear not - it's just a quick 19 hour flight away (for those of us on the east coast).

Push Pop Press is the latest acquisition in Facebook's growing design talent roster.Push Pop Press is the latest acquisition in Facebook's growing design talent roster.

Mike Matas, one of the co-founders of Push Pop Press, is one of the designers behind some of the most familiar iPhone and iPad user interfaces that you've come to know and love. This kind of talent acquisition doesn't come along simply to tweak the look of an iPhone app. They must be working on something big. On a sadder note, Push Pop Press has announced that they have abandoned their planned publishing platform. However, their one offering is still available in the App Store - search for Al Gore's 'Our World'.

Have a peek at some screenshots of the upcoming Facebook app for iPad.Have a peek at some screenshots of the upcoming Facebook app for iPad.

TechCrunch, as well as many others, found out that Facebook was hiding a secret app (not really secret, universal apps contain both sets of code for iPhone and iPad bundled together - although jailbreaking is required to figure that one out) in their latest iPhone app update. That 'secret' turned out to be the official Facebook app for iPhone. TechCrunch has a whole slew of screenshots that you can take a look at as to properly get yourself prepared the social media onslaught.

Harry Potter and Google make semi-unbreakable vow for Pottermore.com website.Harry Potter and Google make semi-unbreakable vow for Pottermore.com website.

Pottermore will be integrated with a number of Google products and APIs. When the series of Harry Potter ebooks and audio books launch on Pottermore.com later this year, you will be able to push them through to your Google eBooks account. Additionally, YouTube will be the default platform for all future video broadcasts, just as it was for JK Rowling’s Pottermore announcement back in June.

An awkward meeting between Twitter founder Biz Stone and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook. An awkward meeting between Twitter founder Biz Stone and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook.

The Next Web posts an interesting article regarding a meeting between the two heads of the socially charged companies that happened some time around November 2008. It is rumored that this is about the time that Facebook was thinking of acquiring Twitter for sum of about $500 million. I smell a Social Network sequel or at the very least an Odd Couple-esque sitcom.

Google would like you to know that they will easily pass ten million G+ users soon.Google would like you to know that they will easily pass ten million G+ users soon.

My latest estimate tonight shows approximately 9.5 million users. This suggests that 2.2 million people have joined Google+ in the past 32-34 hours. I project that Google will easily pass 10 million users tomorrow and could reach 20 million user by this coming weekend if they keep the Invite Button available. As one G+ user put it, it is easy to underestimate the power of exponential growth.

App of the Week: Instantbird

InstantbirdLately I've noticed that I've somehow found myself on a great deal of sites that have their own form of instant messaging clients.  Facebook has one, Google has one, and then there's that ancient AIM account that I can never seem to let go of. The problem is that it can be more than a little annoying having to be logged into each respective utility to do something as simple as instant messaging.  Enter Instantbird. I gave this a whirl last week and I've liked it thus far. Instantbird takes all of these IM clients and puts them into one easy to use app. You can finally see a list of your Facebook friends along with your AIM friends, it works almost a little too well. After adding my Facebook list I was overwhelmed by the number of items on my typically small AIM list.

According to the Instantbird website they currently support the following clients by default: AIM, Facebook Chat, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM, Netsoul, QQ, Simple, Twitter, XMPP, Yahoo and Yahoo JAPAN. That's a pretty big list of clients.

Under the hood is a lot of code from the Mozilla project. As such there are add-ons and familiar settings panes for those who are well-versed in the art of Firefox (you'll notice some similarities mainly in the control panel section). So far I've only tried the app on Windows but there is a Mac version as well. I like that the software is minimal and for the most part stays out of your way.  For those of you can't live without tabs you can have tabbed chats.  For those who are maniacal single window fans (for purposes of IM, I fall into this category) you can turn it off. Lastly, you can also theme your IM conversations with a couple different variations. Overall I reccomend giving this app a try if you like me, you grew tired of having to log in here and log into that. Consolidation of your instant messaging is a good thing.

You can download Instantbird from their website: http://instantbird.com/.

Facebook gets a healthy dose of Skype and adds a helping of group chat for good measure.Facebook gets a healthy dose of Skype and adds a helping of group chat for good measure.

Good news to those of you who spend all day on Facebook. You now have even more reason to hang out there thanks to the inclusion of video conference calling and group chats. Facebook bills this new feature as 'bringing conversations to life'. I think they would have better served had they gone with my way of marketing it as 'enhanced procrastination'.

Let's see - so now we have a Kindle, a Nook, an iPad, and a Kobu. I'll admit that I see many a Kindle on the morning commute into Manhattan and I've spotted the Nook on the subway just once in my travels. I'll also admit that the name Kobu sounds like something you'd eat for dinner.
