- PETA calls for replacement of Punxsutawney Phil in favor of animatronic version.
According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter weather will follow. If he doesn't, expect an early spring. But PETA has had enough of the tradition that dates back to 1886, and believes robotic technology could be the solution.

- Reindeer droppings apparently make for some festive ornaments and jewelry.
The zoo had such success last year selling Christmas ornaments made of the reindeer droppings that they started making jewelry this year. The droppings are dime-sized, dehydrated, sterilized and spray-painted with glitter. They're called 'Magical Reindeer Gems.'

- Park ranger over in New Hampshire finds Big Foot, says he needs permit.
He was dressed as Bigfoot when a park ranger put a stop to his performance art project. Doyle didn't have a permit. But the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union Foundation argues that Doyle's free speech rights were violated.

In the town of Silver Lake, the unit told them to turn right on Forest Service Road 28, and they followed that and some spur roads nearly 35 miles before getting stuck in about 1 1/2 feet of snow near Thompson Reservoir, the sheriff said.
