IBM buys analytics firm SPSS for a mere $1.2 billion.IBM buys analytics firm SPSS for a mere $1.2 billion.

Chicago-based SPSS develops statistical software for survey and scientific research along with marketing, government and educational purposes. The all-cash offer is $50 a share, a 42% premium to SPSS's closing price Monday. The deal is expected to close by year-end.

Both methods produce snapshots in which the central subjects appear to pop off the screen or print. A parlor trick? Perhaps, but Fujifilm is gambling that consumers will not only be willing to pay for such special effects, but they'll also pay extra.
